A few of the Cherry Hinton ringers attended the East Anglian Regional Handbell Team’s concert held in Cambridge on Saturday 10 May. The impressive concert included over 30 people ringing more than 250 handbells, ranging from the lightest bell which weighed around 7oz (200 grams) to a huge bass handbell which weighed over 17lbs. The average cost of each bells is around £1,200 – certainly they are instruments to be careful with!
The Cherry Hinton ringers enjoyed listening to a range of music played on the handbells over two hours including more traditional hymns such as ‘Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing’ through to chart topping popular music including ‘Firework’ by Katy Petty, and tunes from the musicals including ‘Theme to the Lion King’. All were extremely impressed and wished that tower bell ringing always sounded that good!
