A group of ringers from Cherry Hinton went to London to take part in the celebrations to mark the centenary of The Ringing World. We travelled by train from Cambridge Station to Liverpool Street enjoying a pack-up breakfast. Numerous churches were open for ringing and we took the opportunity to ‘grab’ four of them: St Botolph, Aldgate; St Olave, Hart Street; St Vedast, Foster Lane; and St Mary-le-Bow. We had lunch in Dean’s Yard, just outside Westminster Abbey, while listening to others on the mini-rings. We were able to look around the Abbey before the service led by the Dean of Westminster and then partook of the Grand Ringers Tea and watched an amazing performance on 24 handbells. It was a really good day, with lots of ‘best bits’, but for me the highlight was ringing at St Mary le Bow. Words by Vanessa Webster
