On Monday 7 July, Cambridge hosted the Tour de France cycle race. Most of central Cambridge was closed down to motorists and many businesses were shut for the day. A number of the Cherry Hinton bellringers joined other Cambridge and district ringers at Great St Mary’s church to ring as the cycle peloton passed through the city centre.
Later in the afternoon, once the roads opened a group from Cherry Hinton headed into the Ely District far away from the city centre hubbub and rang quarter peals at St James, Stretham and Holy Trinity, Haddenham. Both quarter peals were a successful celebration of the Tour de France visiting Cambridge. Words by Amanda Cator. Photos by Greg Pearce. |
